I am by no means a huge soccer fan or an expert about the game. I am a football, basketball and baseball kind of guy. (Well, I use to be a baseball fan but that was more geared towards playing myself, watching the game on tv is terribly boring for me. The Brewers being awful does not help that.) But I do get into the World Cup and the main reason for me is multiple games on every day.
June can be a brutal sports month since the NBA stretches the Finals so far there is only one or two games a week. We do get the draft later in the month but the NBA draft does not carry the interest level of the NFL draft, mostly due to where your team drafts. The Bucks are at 14, outside of the real studs of any NBA draft. That leaves us with baseball to get us through each day and it is too damn boring and the Brewers suck.
The World Cup matters so much to so many of the people around the World. Teams really care, fans really care, it matters. This caring creates pressures that generate good theatre and we get this theatre multiple times per day for several weeks. If the US can continue their emergence in the soccer world, even better.
For those reasons I can live with a couple 0-0 games as long as there is some action, but only a couple. I tune in for most of the games, usually listening to the game in the backround and rewinding the action when anything actually happens, it is not a bad way to get through June, and closer to NFL training camp.
