The Bucks selected mystery man Giannis Antetokounmpo with the 15th pick of the first round of the NBA Draft.
A 6’9″ wing from Greece with a handle, Antetokounmpo has a 7’3″ wingspan and he’s grown about three inches in the last ten months. He’s 18 years old. In addition to having an NBA body, his greatest asset is that he can drive to the rim and find open teammates with passes.
The knock, of course, is that he’s done all of these things against inferior competition: a scrubby, lower-tier Greek league. He hasn’t even been to the United States until this week, he’s not ready for the NBA at the moment, and it may be a while before he’s ready to help the Bucks, even though Milwaukee plans to have him on their roster next season.
But when a player has those physical tools, a handle, a jump shot (he made 34% of his threes), AND has the potential to use that body as an NBA defender, it’s worth the risk of a #15 pick.
