The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired guard J.J. Redick, forward/center Gustavo Ayon (goo-STAH-voh eye-OWN) and guard Ish Smith from the Orlando Magic in exchange for forward Tobias Harris and guards Doron Lamb and Beno Udrih, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

So it’s the trade everyone expected, and it doesn’t sound like there were any hidden details such as a swap of cash or minor draft picks.

As I mentioned earlier, Beno Udrih, Monta Ellis, and even Doron Lamb have been poor three-point shooters.  They have combined to make 59 of 249 three-pointers on the season (23.7%).  J.J. Redick by himself is 117 of 300 (39.0%).  He can nearly double the output and success rate all by himself.

He’s not a one-trick pony, either.  Over the seven seasons Redick has been in the NBA, he has add strength and bulk, and improved his defense the the point that he isn’t a liability, though he won’t ever be a lockdown guy.

Better yet, defenses will have to account for him a long way from the basket, and that should give all the other Bucks, especially Brandon Jennings, more room to work.

Plus, everything that the Bucks have in their offensive system for Mike Dunleavy and to a lesser extent, Monta Ellis, will work for Redick.

Gustavo Ayon is an interesting addition given that the Bucks already have a number of tweener power forward/center types.  But he is a good passer for a big man.

He got more of an opportnity to play as a rookie last season with New Orleans than he has this season with Orlando. In the 24 games he started with the Hornets, Ayon averaged 8.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also averaged 2.0 assists when he started for New Orleans, a nice total for a big man. He isn’t as good a defender as Ekpe Udoh, but he’s better in the pick-and-roll. It should be an interesting battle between the two, though Udoh holds the advantage early on for knowing the Bucks’ system better and for being a much better defender.

But offensively, here is Ayon operating in a game against Portland. Note that at the beginning of the clip, the Magic are using a motion scheme similar to the one the Bucks use, and he looks so comfortable passing from the top — unlike some of the other Bucks bigs, who catch and pass the ball like they’ve been handed a communicable disease.

The Bucks haven’t had a passing big man like that since, well, Drew Gooden. But that’s another story.

He also has a nice chemistry with Redick.

Ish Smith is a fast guard who excels on the defensive side of the ball.  With Jennings, Ellis and Redick lined up, he probably won’t be seeing many minutes.
The Bucks hold a team option on Ayon for next season, while Smith has a guaranteed contract.  Collectively, the pair will earn less than $2.5 million in 2013-14.
