Giannis Antetokounmpo: 3 playmaking free agents to pair with the MVP – No. 1 Rajon Rondo
On paper, Rajon Rondo may seem like an irregular fit next to Giannis Antetokounmpo, but if these past few months have showcased anything, he might be the ideal fit next to the MVP.
By all accounts, Rondo had a mediocre regular season for the Los Angeles Lakers. So much so that fans were calling for the team to bring in a new backup point guard all year long. However, as his nickname, “Playoff Rondo” dictates, the guard flipped the switch when the playoffs rolled around.
Rondo played a crucial role in LA’s title run this season, averaging 8.9 points on .455/.400/.684 shooting splits, 4.3 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.4 steals across 16 games. As the point guard hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the second time in his career, he simultaneously earned himself a hefty payday in free agency.
He does have a $2.7 million player option for next season but recently declared that he would opt-out to test the free agent market. Out of the several teams in hot pursuit of Rondo this offseason, the Bucks should be one of them.
Their biggest weakness in recent memory has been guard play in the postseason, and Rondo has proven that he is a game-changer on the biggest stage. In terms of playmaking ability, the 34-year-old can hang with the best of them, averaging 8.3 assists per game over his 14-year career.
Undoubtedly one of the highest IQ players to ever play the game of basketball, the Bucks could use a player like Rondo to orchestrate the offense when teams wall of Antetokounmpo in the postseason. Rondo played alongside another talented big man by the name of Kevin Garnett for several years, and it would be interesting to see what the three-time league assists leader could do next to Antetokounmpo.
Rondo’s asking price is unknown at this moment, but the Bucks should make a run at the two-time champion.
