As the Milwaukee Bucks hold the 24th pick in the upcoming 2022 NBA draft, Dalen Terry is someone who they certainly may be considering selecting. There is a lot to like about Terry, and he has become a pretty popular draft choice for the Bucks among fans. Here is a look at what he brings to the table as a player and how he fits with the Bucks.

Milwaukee Bucks Draft Scouting Report: Dalen Terry – Strengths

    Defensive Versatility

Dalen Terry looks like a wing who can be highly versatile on defense and guard several positions. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive team and really shined on that end in college. He has long arms combined with great activity and awareness that really bothers opposing offenses. Terry held opponents to just 31.5 percent from the field last year and 0.72 points per possession, ranking in the 85th percentile, per Synergy. He is good on or off the ball, and projects as a very nice wing defender at the next level who generates a lot of steals.

    Playmaking

With good ball handling and feel for the game, Terry is a very good playmaker who can run some point. Per Sports Reference, he had a very high assist rate of 22.1 percent last year and averaged 5.6 assists to just two turnovers per 40 minutes. He can attack and then find open shooters or cutters, and he is good passing out of the pick-and-roll as well. He generated 1.2 points per possession from his pick-and-roll passes, which ranked in the 88th percentile this past season. He definitely has the ability to be a good playmaker and creator for others at the NBA level.

    Transition

Terry is someone who loves to get out and run, and he executes in transition extremely well. On his shots and assists in transition combined, he generated 1.63 points per possession, which ranked in the 94th percentile. He is great at turning defense into offense, as he jumps in passing lanes to get steals and then creates a transition opportunity. He brings so much energy and always runs hard up the floor trying to push it, and he either scores effectively or makes the right play.

    Shooting Projection

Terry is not a special shooter from the outside, but there are good signs that project him as a solid threat in the NBA. He shot 36.4 percent from three this past season and 37.5 percent on all jump shots, both solid numbers. He is pretty good spotting up and knocking down catch-and-shoot threes, and definitely has shown improvement from his first year in college. He may never be a lethal shooter from outside, but he should be good enough to garner attention from the defense.

Milwaukee Bucks Draft Scouting Report: Dalen Terry – Weaknesses

    Unproven Shot

Although it looks as though Terry’s shot will be fine in the NBA, it is unproven. His numbers have come on a pretty limited sample, as he only attempted 1.9 threes per game in college. His role at Arizona was more complementary, so it is hard to judge him as an overall shooter and scorer. The numbers also don’t stand out, and although they are fine, things don’t point to him being any type of special three-point shooter at the next level.

    Perimeter Creation

Offensively, Terry is great at getting into the paint, creating for others, and he can spot up and hit some shots, but he doesn’t possess much of an ability to create his own shot on the perimeter. He did not play in isolation at all (again partially due to his role), and took a total of just 11 jumpers off the dribble last season. He struggles with his floater as well (26.7 percent) and it appears that overall his half court scoring is unproven and limited. There is very little he does that stands out as a scorer in the half court, so he may always be more of a complimentary piece who doesn’t score a lot.

    Pick-and-Roll Scoring

This is another part of Dalen Terry’s offensive game that doesn’t seem to be there. Although he is awesome as a pick-and-roll passer, he ranked in just the 17th percentile as a pick-and-roll scorer. His limited ability to shoot off the dribble and his struggle shooting floaters definitely contributes a lot to this. Combining all of these weaknesses together, it is clear that Terry’s half court scoring ability is nothing special, and he is more of a playmaker and complementary player on offense. He shouldn’t be relied on to score in the half court consistently.

Milwaukee Bucks Draft Scouting Report: Dalen Terry – Outlook

Dalen Terry is somewhat of a swiss army knife who can bring a lot of things to the table. He can handle the ball, be a playmaker, defend at a high level, and appears to have solid shooting ability. Because of this, the Bucks definitely should consider him if he is on the board at 24. Any player who can be a high level playmaker and defender is worth considering for the Bucks.

The issue with drafting Terry is that he doesn’t bring a ton of scoring and shot creation to the table, which the Bucks could be looking for right now. Very little about his half court scoring is proven, and his upside may be capped if he cannot score the ball at a very high level.

I personally would be happy if the Bucks drafted Terry. He can potentially be a “point wing” for the Bucks and fill some of their bench ball handling needs, and he also brings great defense and energy combined with some shooting. He can get out and run which should be fun to pair with an amazing transition player like Giannis, and I think he’d fit in nicely with the Bucks and give them immediate ball handling and defense off the bench.

    Grade for Milwaukee Bucks: A-

Stay tuned to see where Terry falls on draft night.
