BTBP Mock NBA Draft: Editor’s Edition
By Adam McGee
What The Experts Say:
"Hezonja is a steal. He has the size, athleticism, shooting ability and competitive demeanor to be an elite NBA wing. And his experience playing for one of the top teams in Europe, FC Barcelona, should make him an immediate contributor. – Chad Ford, ESPN"
What The Player Says:
"I should be the first pick in the NBA draft. – Mario Hezonja"
What BTBP Says:
Hezonja is a sharp-shooter first and foremost, but limiting his game to just that is doing him a disservice. The Croatian has great size for his position on the wing, and with that he has potential to become not only a dominant offensive player, but also as a meaningful defender too.
In that respect, there are similarities between Hezonja and Dario Saric, the sharp shooting forward that was drafted (and ultimately stashed) by the Philadelphia 76ers last year. That also applies to concerns over attitude.
Austin Peters of Upside and Motor spoke of the potential effects of just that, and how in spite of his talents that could lead to him falling all the way to number ten:
"Hezonja has been rumored to have attitude problems, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that scares off a few teams in the lottery. Based on the Croatians talent, however, he might just be worth the risk."
If he was to fall that low, although it’s not normally Pat Riley’s favored approach, don’t be surprised to see him go after Hezonja. Reports from Miami suggest that Riley even made a visit to Spain to scout him earlier in the season, and a player ready to compete immediately would definitely fit the Heat mold.
