18. Alvin Robertson – The Second-Best Bucks Guard Named Robertson
The Stats: Four seasons played in Milwaukee. 12.7/5.3/5.0/2.7/0.3 on 47.3/31.4/74.2.
The Accolades: Led the NBA in steals per game in 1991 and in steal percentage in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Was an NBA All-Star in 1991. Voted on the NBA All-Defensive First Team in 1991 and the All-Defensive Second Team in 1990. Has the fourth-most recorded steals of any Buck in franchise history.
The Breakdown: Gary Payton may have been The Glove, but his time on the Bucks compared to Robertson’s makes him look more like The Mitten. Robertson was the real deal on defense, and caused problems for opposing guards on both sides of the ball, as evidenced by the near triple-double he dropped on Michael Jordan in 1990.
That playoff series was Robertson’s high point in Milwaukee. The Bulls were the better team, but Robertson made Jordan and company work for their eventual series win. Robertson averaged 23.5 points and 2.3 steals per game, leading the Bucks in both categories.
Robertson enjoyed even more success on the San Antonio Spurs before coming to Milwaukee, but he had a great run in both cities. He was a true defensive terror, and the rest of the NBA recognized him for it. There are several defensive standouts in Milwaukee’s storied history, and Robertson certainly belongs next to some of the higher-profile names on this list.
