2. Sidney Moncrief – Sid the Squid

The Stats: Ten seasons played in Milwaukee. 16.7/5.0/3.9/1.3/0.3 on 50.3/27.6/83.2.

The Accolades: Drafted fifth overall by the Bucks in 1979. All-Star in 1982-86. Defensive Player of the Year in 1983 and 1984. Selected to the All-NBA First Team in 1983, the All-NBA Second Team in 1982 and from 1984-86, the All-Defensive First Team from 1983-86, and the All-Defensive Second Team in 1982. Led the Bucks in win shares from 1982-86. Has his #4 retired by the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Breakdown: Sidney Moncrief is likely the most underrated player both in the Bucks community and the NBA community at large. Moncrief was a deadly threat on both ends–he claimed the first two Defensive MVPs to ever be awarded, and also scored 16 points per game on 50 percent shooting in his time with the Bucks.

Moncrief was the largest contributor to the best era in Bucks history. In his ten years in Milwaukee, the Bucks went to the Conference Semifinals six times, the Conference Finals three times, and lost in the first round just one time. The Bucks never missed the playoffs with Moncrief around.

It wasn’t just Bucks personalities that were impressed by Moncrief, however. Michael Jordan had this to say about him, according to NBA.com: “When you play against Moncrief, you’re in for a night of all-around basketball. He’ll hound you everywhere you go, both ends of the court. You just expect it.” That, coming from Air Jordan, just about sums up Sid the Squid.
