Like the Bucks, the Knicks are another one of the teams around the league, who it’s fair to say have an uncertain roster makeup at the point guard position. Of course, with the recent firing of Derek Fisher that’s not the only thing uncertain in the Big Apple.

In spite of his Rookie of the Year honors, many now project Michael Carter-Williams’ future as something of a system point guard, and with that consideration, could MCW work nicely in the triangle?

Prior to last summer’s draft, Fisher spoke of the flexibility that comes as a by-product of the triangle system not only on the court, but in terms of team-building:

"That’s kind of the beauty of the system. You don’t have to build around one position or player. You actually can find ways to just get the best basketball players that are available to you and utilize all those different skill sets to your advantage."

Could that play into Carter-Williams’ strengths? Historically the most successful iterations of the triangle have not been driven by point guards (i.e. Jordan and Pippen’s Bulls and Kobe and Shaq’s Lakers) and that background role could suit Carter-Williams if he showed the discipline to buy into it.

He may not be quite as good of a shooter as someone coaching the system would ideally want, although his shot hasn’t been terrible this season, but MCW’s finishing ability could make him a dangerous back door cutter from the corners.

Perhaps, even more pressing than his fit is what the Knicks have to play with at point guard. Jose Calderon is an aging veteran that no team is going to be comfortable having as a starting point guard, and then there’s rookie Jerian Grant who hasn’t necessarily found his feet yet.

With this year’s free agent class short on point guards, MCW could be a nice tie over for the Knicks as a low risk punt on a cheap deal. The problem is what do the Knicks give back? They’ve no flexibility when it comes to picks and not a whole lot of appealing role players to choose from.

Maybe, the Bucks would take the chance on Jerian Grant in a straight up swap, but would New York be willing to part with their rookie so soon?

As ESPN New York’s Alan Hahn proves, MCW’s availability is at least enough for those associated with the Knicks to stop and think. Beyond that, who knows.
