John Henson – A

Many fans continue to deride the large contract extension given to John Henson last summer, based on his lack of flashy per game numbers. Here’s a fun fact known by pretty much everybody: it’s hard to put up stunning numbers in under 17 minutes per game.

Looking at Henson’s per 36 minutes statistics makes it a lot more obvious why I gave him such a good grade.

Henson is averaging 14.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a staggering 4.3 blocks per 36. He’s shooting a team-high 59 percent from the field, and also leading all Bucks in defensive box plus/minus and defensive rating.

Only Greg Monroe has added more wins per 48 minutes than Henson to Milwaukee this season, and those two are tied for the team lead in box plus/minus at the All-Star break. Just because Henson isn’t getting much run doesn’t mean he hasn’t been fantastic in limited minutes.

If John Henson got the chance to be Milwaukee’s full-time starter the fans would likely appreciate him a lot more, and he deserves that respect. Maybe if Monroe gets dealt in the next few days, Henson will finally get that opportunity.
