26. Gary Payton II – Point Guard (Oregon State)

Words by Jordan Treske

Payton II’s 2015-16 season: 16.1 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 5.2 APG, 2.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG, 49.3% FG

Being the son of a hall-of-fame point guard isn’t easy, but Gary Payton II has a very legitimate chance of following in his Dad’s footsteps by becoming an NBA player this summer.

Payton II’s an intriguing prospect in many ways because he can fill up the stat sheet in so many ways.  Yet due to his size and length (listed at 6’2” and has a 6’6” wingspan), Payton II’s defensive potential may be unparalleled for any point guard that’s entering this draft and his 2.5 steals per game currently rank sixth in the NCAA, according to ESPN.com.

Payton II’s also an incredible athlete and whether it’s picking off a pass or grabbing a rebound and taking it coast to coast, Payton II can create a highlight worthy play at any time.

The biggest question regarding Payton II is on the offensive end. Payton II’s an efficient scorer from the field as he’s shooting 50 percent on 16.1 points per game this season, but his three-point shooting (30 percent) is a big question mark for a player at his position to overcome.

Additionally, Payton II’s age (23 years old) may be enough for teams to look elsewhere this draft, whether it’s warranted or not.
