2. Retooling at the right time

Milwaukee Sent: Marques Johnson, Junior Bridgeman and Harvey Catchings

Los Angles Sent: Terry Cummings, Craig Hodges and Ricky Pierce

Marques Johnson and Junior Bridgeman are two franchise legends who gave immeasurable contributions to the Bucks teams they played on. With a lot of teams around the league that’s the sort of thing that would have led to irrational sentimentality, but Milwaukee did not fall into that trap.

With both Johnson and Bridgeman advancing in years, the Bucks sold high by picking up three players who would be key figures for the team in another period of contending.

Cummings, Hodges and Pierce would all go on to be influential in Milwaukee, while both Bridgeman and Johnson had effectively retired three seasons later.

This trade should be taken as exhibit A for how to retool a good team.
