Reactions: The Bad

  • Despite their great production of late, the Bucks need to find a way to reduce their starter’s minutes. Giannis played 41, after 42 on Monday. Parker played 37 after 40 on Monday. And Middleton, one of the league’s top five in minutes played, ran 38 after 44 on Monday. The problem is that the bench only goes so deep–about as deep as a one-layer burrito–without the option to add fire sauce for flavor. Gross. They’re young, but not invincible.
  • The book is out on Giannis. Here’s Lavoy Allen following those pages perfectly–daring Giannis to lift for a mid-range jumper. He’s going to see a lot of that until he shows he can drill that 15-20 footer. Interestingly, the very next time down the floor, from the same exact spot, Giannis lifted for the jumper and hit it.
  • This isn’t an indictment on Middleton’s ability to make big shots. We’ve seen him hit plenty of them. But lately he hasn’t been able to come up with huge shots at the end of games. That’s partly on the personnel–defenses know where the Bucks are going down three, but some of the blame lies with Middleton. Wednesday night, down three, he lifted for an off balance awkward three pointer with six seconds left. It came up short, essentially sealing the game. Meanwhile the Pacers left the lane wide-open, daring the Bucks to take the quick two. They didn’t. Ball game.
