Salary

Here’s where things get hairy regarding Dion Waiters’ free agency. Rumors have been swirling for months about Waiters wanting to get max money, which comes out to something like $94 million over four years on the open market.

I’ll take a hard pass on giving Waiters some $23 million a year–that’s insane considering his lack of efficient production on the offensive end. Teams will gamble this summer considering all of the cap space they’ll have open, but that’s one hell of a dice roll.

To put it flatly, the Milwaukee Bucks won’t pay that for Dion Waiters. They can’t pay that kind of money for anybody other than an absolute top tier free agent, considering the contract extensions Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker will need in the next couple of years.

Even if Waiters takes a “discount,” it’s terrifying to think of how much he could make. This is a deal for the Brooklyn Nets or some other team with no options and a lot of cap space to make. That’s the sort of team that’ll likely end up with Waiters.
