1994 Trade Deadline

Two trades! The Bucks traded Frank Brickowski to the Hornets for Mike Gminski and a conditional 1996 first round pick.

Milwaukee also traded Danny Schayes to the Los Angeles Lakers for a second round pick.

The second trade here is largely irrelevant. Schayes was a decent role player who had unfortunately deteriorated by the time the Bucks dealt him to L.A., and the second-rounder from that deal didn’t turn into much.

The first trade, on the other hand, is fascinating. The Bucks traded Brick to avoid paying him and got back Gminski, who played a whopping nine games with Milwaukee before ending his career later that season.

That’s not the fascinating part. The pick Milwaukee got back in the deal was protected for selections one through 13 in the 1996 NBA Draft, according to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. The Hornets ended up with the 13th overall pick in that draft, meaning it did not convey to Milwaukee.

Charlotte used that pick to draft, and then trade, Kobe Bryant. In addition to the Bucks wanting to draft Kobe with their own pick, the team was one lotto spot away from getting a second crack at him. The Bucks ended up trading the Charlotte pick, and it turned into Paul Grant in 1997.
