2003 Trade Deadline

The Bucks traded Ray Allen, Flip Murray, Kevin Ollie and a first rounder in 2003 to the Seattle Supersonics for Desmond Mason and Gary Payton.

Whew boy. This one is a doozy. In the ultimate George Karl move, the furious head coach played a key role in getting the Bucks to trade prime Ray Allen away in exchange for an aging Gary Payton and Desmond Mason.

This is probably the worst trade in franchise history. Kareem getting traded sucked, but he wanted out–there wasn’t much the Bucks could do. This one is on Milwaukee.

Payton was good with the Bucks–for the 28 whole games he played in Milwaukee before bolting, that is. Mason had a good three-year stretch with the Bucks, but he was certainly no Ray Allen!

Allen would go on to have a fantastic career that would include seven non-Bucks All-Star seasons and two non-Bucks championships. There’s no guarantee Milwaukee wins a title with Ray-Ray, but I’d be willing to bet their chances improve significantly with him around for a while longer.

The first round pick in 2003 turned into Luke Ridnour, who would end up spending time with the Bucks, and just about every other NBA team.
