Greg Monroe and Spencer Hawes opt in to their player options

Both Greg Monroe and Spencer Hawes chose to opt in to their player options for next year in Milwaukee. Monroe’s contract for next season is for $17.9 million and Hawes’ contract is for $6 million.

Although Monroe’s long-term fit in Milwaukee may be in question, his performance last year was undoubtedly impressive. He was Milwaukee’s second best player behind Giannis last season, and a picture of consistency throughout the year. Monroe is the offensive spark for the second unit, and will be a key component of the Bucks’ season in the coming year. If Monroe plays as well as last year, the Bucks could battle for a top four seed in the East, and he could also become a Sixth Man of the Year contender.

Hawes, on the other hand, is a different story. His decision to opt in could be costly for Milwaukee, as it projects to be one of the deals that puts them over the luxury tax. In all likelihood, Hawes could be stretched and waived to get the team back under the luxury tax line, if they fail to make a trade otherwise.
