Checking in on the roster spot battle

A regular thread throughout the team’s training camp and preseason has been the fight to grab the team’s last remaining roster spot with the players they brought in on camp invites/hold non-guaranteed deals.

Up until this point, it had been an underwhelming one, in terms of what we’ve seen throughout the team’s games during the preseason and it continued again on Friday night.

With Brandon Rush sitting out for the final preseason game due to an issue with his hamstring, that left each one of Gary Payton II, Gerald Green and Joel Anthony to leave a final and lasting impression before cuts have to be made.

Despite sharing most of their time on the floor together, none of their respective play really stood out for the right reasons, aside from an impressive rejection in front of the rim by Anthony on Tobias Harris that helped keep the team’s dwindling lead intact in the game’s final minutes.

While it’s fair to say it had been an uninspiring aspect to the team’s preseason, we now know the conclusion as the Bucks awarded the last roster spot to Green after waiving all three of Payton II, Anthony and Rush well after the game.

What kind of role Green ends up playing for the Bucks throughout the year remains to be seen, but let’s hope he winds up being a reliable contributor the team can depend on when his name is called.
