How does Dellavedova fit in?

As time has progressed and everyone has had more and more time to watch this Bucks team develop, for many, a sense has emerged that the Bucks need a more dominant point guard presence than was previously thought.

While it’s difficult to say with any real certainty that the aforementioned sentiment will be proven true in the longer term, if it is, well then Dellavedova isn’t going to quite fit the bill.

Perhaps that’s part of the reason why he lost the starting job to Malcolm Brogdon last season, but regardless, Dellavedova can still have utility for the Bucks in a rotation role.

Dellavedova isn’t a seamless fit defensively as he lacks the kind of length and athleticism that can be particularly useful in Jason Kidd‘s scheme, but he’s still hard working, tenacious and attentive enough to be able to make it work.

On the other end, Dellavedova’s utility shines through in his ability to function as a point guard in on or off-ball roles. As long as he’s paired with more dynamic options around him, the former Saint Mary’s Gael can act as a reliable caretaker of sorts, keeping an offense moving with solid passing and low-risk plays.

It’s also worth noting that some of Dellavedova’s best play came in more of an off-ball role during his time playing with LeBron James in Cleveland. With creators like Giannis Antetokounmpo, and to a lesser extent Khris Middleton, the Bucks are well-suited to offering Dellavedova a natural fit.
