Milwaukee Bucks: 4 potential restricted free agency suitors for Jabari Parker
By Rohan Katti
Atlanta Hawks
Projected 2018-19 Cap Space: $31,922,134
Why it makes sense
Another victim of the tumultuous summer of 2017, the Atlanta Hawks lost their star in Paul Millsap to the Denver Nuggets. This might have been a mutual departure, but nonetheless, the Hawks are now devoid of any significant talent on the roster. Dennis Schröder and Kent Bazemore are good players, but they are not centerpieces for a rebuild.
The Hawks’ 2018 1st round pick should bring in a major talent, but it is not guaranteed. If Jabari Parker were to sign with the Hawks, he would immediately be the centerpiece for the franchise. Atlanta has a lot of cap space to use, and would have the urgency to come out the victor of a bidding war for Parker’s talent.
Why it doesn’t make sense
When starting a rebuild, the Hawks might be concerned to center their rebuild around an injured player. Given Atlanta’s situation, signing Parker would be a substantial risk as he would essentially become their franchise.
If Jabari were to suffer another major injury, the Hawks would be back to square one. With no other player to take the mantle of centerpiece player, the Atlanta Hawks would be better suited to look at other options besides Parker.
