Wisconsin Herd complete incredible comeback to beat Sioux Falls Skyforce
By Adam McGee
Concerning takeaway
Although they rallied through on this occasion, and have managed to do so in impressive fashion earlier in the season too, the Herd have a really big third quarter problem that needs to be addressed.
The Herd are managing to survive large second half deficits due to their excellent play in the clutch and sixth placed rank in fourth quarter net rating, but they’re only finding themselves in trouble to begin with due to being easily the worst third quarter team in the G League.
Wisconsin hasn’t exactly been thriving in the first quarter either, which would indicate that they’re a team that takes some time to get in rhythm, but their third quarters have been disastrous enough to make their overall record of 10-6 seem like a marvel.
The Herd’s quarter by quarter net ratings tell the story:
First quarter: -6.6 (21st in the G League)
Second quarter: 8.5 (fifth in the G League)
Third quarter: -19.7 (26th in the G League)
Fourth quarter: 7.0 (sixth in the G League)
It’s difficult not to be impressed by watching how the Herd play from night to night, but yet the numbers have never really backed up their impressive record.
If they can get a handle on how they come out after halftime, that could change significantly as the season progresses.
