Breaking up Lob City for good

To start off, this trade could not be completed until next summer because Blake Griffin signed the Designated Player Extension this past summer. Also, there is about a $10 million discrepancy in salaries so filler would need to be added, but I am intrigued by the concept of this trade.

Blake Griffin is a five-time NBA All-Star in his prime, but injury after injury has derailed his career, the most recent being a sprained knee on November 28 that he still has not returned from.

From the Clippers’ perspective, they would be ecstatic to receive this package given the recent market for star players being traded.

Steve Ballmer and Co. would have a great player in Khris Middleton, and two young prospects in Brogdon and Maker, plus a draft pick to start a rebuild. Trading DeAndre Jordan would most likely be imminent if Griffin is dealt, and LAC would get to start from scratch with some intriguing pieces.

However, this would be a very risky move on behalf of the Bucks. Middleton is a great player on a decent contract, and Brogdon and Maker are contributing while still on their rookie deals. There is also Jabari Parker, who seems to come from the exact same mold as Griffin; an explosive power forward who has stretched out his range and improved his playmaking ability.

Why should the Bucks give up extremely valuable assets to acquire a player they might already have a younger version of?
