Positive takeaway

While it was very much a slugfest Friday afternoon, the Herd’s playmaking was a big element in their winning formula over the Spurs.

The Herd were able to generate 23 assists on their 36 made field goals in the win, which ranks right in the middle for where their assist output compares in their previous games for the season. The leading contributor in this regard Friday was VCU product JeQuan Lewis, who just came shy of tallying double-digit assists with 9 on the day.

As has been the case for much of the season, the Herd’s pass-happy mentality almost came at a fault as those 23 assists were coupled with 22 turnovers, with Lewis and Xavier Munford being the biggest culprits on that point by compiling 12 of those turnovers collectively.

But knowing full well that is what comes with the territory for the Herd, it’s all about managing that level of playmaking while cutting down on those miscues that will surely shine through eventually on a given night.
