Monty Williams

Touted as an early frontrunner by many, some of the positives that Williams demonstrated in his time with the Pelicans could work nicely for him if he was to take over in Milwaukee.

Although his New Orleans teams had their fair share of problems, Williams built a group that was offensively very good (ninth in the NBA) and defensively passable by the time he was dismissed.

Considering some of the reports that emerged about internal dynamics during Kidd’s tenure, and have only continued to trickle out since he was fired, the positive relationships that Williams seems to build with those around him could arguably be even more important.

Williams developed an especially close relationship with Pelicans star Anthony Davis, but is generally viewed as an affable and popular figure around the league beyond that too.

The appeal for Williams extends to his recent activity. The personal tragedy he’s had to endure has been well-documented, but Williams has spent much of the time since diversifying his expertise as the San Antonio Spurs’ Vice President of Basketball Operations.

That taste of front office life may allow the 46-year-old to return to the NBA with a whole new range of knowledge that he can apply to day-to-day coaching. In a fascinating profile by Sports Illustrated’s Chris Ballard last year, Williams noted that a return to coaching would “center” him. Perhaps the Bucks will be the team to provide the opportunity.
