Player of the game

One of the Herd’s integral pieces this year, JeQuan Lewis put in a terrific performance by necessity Saturday night against the Nets.

Coming off the bench, Lewis came out hunting for his own offense more than normal, displaying the same relentless attacking that all Herd fans have come to expect to see out of the first-year pro this season.

Being one of the few players for the Herd that was forcing the issue when it came to earning calls from the game’s officials, a good chunk of Lewis’ offense came at the free throw line as he was 9-of-12 from the stripe. When the VCU product wasn’t doing that, he was displaying his great touch around the basket as well as competing hard defensively, scraping with his assignment throughout the night.

All in all, Lewis posted a season-high 32 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field (1-of-3 from deep), four rebounds, four assists, four steals, three turnovers, a block and was a -3 in 34 minutes of action.

While the Herd’s overall performance has gradually trended downwards since the start of 2018, Lewis’ blossoming individual development has been a rare ray of hope over the last couple of months, making for the exact type of story that makes following the Herd and the G League as a whole worthwhile.
