Attacked on the glass

While it was an encouraging day overall, the Bucks weren’t without flaws in their performance on Sunday afternoon.

The biggest of their blemishes, as has often been the case throughout the year, were their struggles competing on the boards with the Spurs. For the day, the Spurs outrebounded the Bucks 53-37.

That disparity shined greatly while the Bucks were on the defensive end as the Spurs’ size, savvy positioning and willingness to track back on the glass consistently posed problems for the Bucks, considering the Spurs hauled down 20 offensive rebounds, generating 25 second chance points off of those reloads.

Bucks head coach Joe Prunty sought ways to combat that as the game wore on, opting to ride with the sturdier Tyler Zeller over second-year big man Thon Maker for example. But that particular adjustment didn’t provide the stop-gap solution he was looking for in that area of the game.

Managing to win in spite of that, this specific issue is nothing new for the Bucks since it has long plagued them throughout the Jason Kidd/Prunty era. Although it didn’t sink them this time around, there’s no guarantee the same kind of result will come to pass when it inevitably arises next time.
