NBA Draft 2018 Prospect Watch: Dzanan Musa
By Adam McGee
Weaknesses
While Musa’s height makes him an intriguing option on the offensive end, his 195lb frame leaves plenty of questions for how he will hold up on the NBA level.
Musa’s slender physique may negatively impact his ability to get to the rim in the NBA, while on the defensive end it also creates a problem in terms of what position the Bosnian will generally guard.
Further accentuating that issue, Musa struggles in keeping faster wings in front of him on the defensive end. If Musa can’t defend quicker wings and is too weak for bigger forwards, is there any way for him to realistically keep his head above water defensively?
Part of the problem could trace back to an injury concern that hangs over Musa. As Draft Express pointed out in a reliably excellent video breakdown, Musa’s stance and posture is particularly hunched on both ends of the floor. This could be a by-product of previous back injuries, or it could be something that he could improve on with coaching and strength and conditioning work.
As ESPN’s Mike Schmitz noted:
"“What teams find in Musa’s medical report will go a long way in determining where he’s drafted, as he has dealt with back issues since he was young and doesn’t have the most projectable frame.”"
Musa’s most prominent kinks on the offensive end generally come down to decision-making. He shot only 32.4 percent from three-point range across all competitions with Cedevita this season, but his shot-making would suggest that’s a number that could rise significantly if he was more selective in picking his spots. Likewise, a greater willingness to pass before trouble arrives wouldn’t hurt.
