Weaknesses

Though his offensive profile grades well, there are some concerns about how Dylan Windler’s game will translate at the NBA level.

First, Windler isn’t quick enough laterally to stay in front of most smaller, more athletics guards on defense, particularly point guards. NBA teams will try to force a switch in the pick-and-roll to try and exploit this weakness.

He also lacks the strength and the traditional size to guard most NBA forwards too, something Kevin O’Connor highlights in his NBA Draft Preview for The Ringer.  His physical limitations could make him an awkward fit at any NBA position defensively.

Another concern is his free throw shooting. Though he showed improvement in each season, his free throwing shooting was below average, particularly for a guard, prior to this season.

Windler could also improve his play-making for others. Though much of the offense ran through him at Belmont in his final two seasons, he never averaged more than 2.7 assists in any given season. His assist-to-turnover ratio was also nearly 1:1 in his junior and senior seasons.

One final concern is that Windler is already 23. Given his age, it’s unlikely that his ceiling will be much beyond what he’s already displayed in college. He may have a high-floor, but it seems somewhat unlikely that he’ll ever be anything more than solid rotation player or fringe starter in the NBA.
