NBA Draft 2019 Prospect Watch: Carsen Edwards
Fit with the Bucks
With Edwards’ range falling firmly between late in the first round to early in the second round, it looks as if the Bucks are in the sweet spot of where the former Boilermaker will be selected a few days from now.
That doesn’t guarantee that Edwards will be available by the time the Bucks are on the clock, but in the event that he is, he may be a prospect the team thinks about for a few factors.
For starters, Milwaukee may have a positional need at backup point guard as George Hill will likely become a free agent after the Bucks elect to waive him with his salary guarantee date coming up on July 1. Although that doesn’t shut the door completely on Hill returning, it obviously invites the opportunity for him to look elsewhere and for more money, given the Bucks’ other free agencies they’ll have to address.
Now, to say that Edwards would fill Hill’s shoes would be very misguided as both players couldn’t be more different players, both in terms of skill set and obviously, experience.
Of course, Edwards would give the Bucks a different dimension with his limitless and skilled shooting ability and the team does have the personnel to cover his defensive limitations, which will be necessary on the next level.
However, is Edwards’ scoring knack alone to justify selecting him with the 30th overall pick? With his playmaking and defensive deficiencies, it would be hard to envision the Bucks selecting Edwards, especially under the parameters they’ve made with past draft selections.
