Talen Horton-Tucker

First of all, I acknowledge categorizing Talen Horton-Tucker as a guard is contentious in itself, but the same could be said if he was grouped with the wings or forwards, and arguments of varying strength could be made for both of those options too.

In a way, that quandary sums up Horton-Tucker, who’s largely unlike many prospects in recent memory in boasting both supreme physical gifts and issues, and an impressive mix of skills, albeit ones that aren’t necessarily ideal for his size. Still, Horton-Tucker could develop into an immensely valuable and versatile player with the development and imagination of the right team.

There aren’t many 6’4″ players who weigh 235lbs, but just as uncharacteristic is a 7’1″ wingspan for a guard, or the kind of passing and ball-handling that Horton-Tucker boasts at that weight. Difficult shot-making doesn’t hurt Horton-Tucker’s cause either, particularly as he’s one of the youngest players in the class at just 18 years old.

The make or break question may well be what position will Horton-Tucker defend, and a lack of lateral quickness certainly complicates that issue further. Perhaps that proves to be too prohibitive to consider him as a guard, yet his height would be easily exploited by opposing 3s and 4s. Horton-Tucker isn’t easy to put in a box, and perhaps that makes him an interesting wildcard to have in a team’s arsenal. Whether the Bucks will feel that way remains to be seen.
