Matisse Thybulle

If the Bucks are looking for a plug-and-play defender, who can be trusted to make the right play, and may well be capable of contributing right away, they need look no further than Matisse Thybulle.

Thybulle’s upside is likely more limited than most players who will hear their name called in the first round on Thursday, but that doesn’t detract from his value as a solid rotation player who could grow into a reliable specialist for the years ahead. In reality, expecting much more than a nice rotation piece like Thybulle at this point in the draft is likely bordering on over-optimistic.

His long-term effectiveness will undoubtedly be tied to Thybulle proving himself as a consistently positive three-point shooter, but equally important may be an increased willingness to take those shots. There’s a touch of Tony Snell to be seen in just how deferential Thybulle can be at times, although there are obviously worse problems to have than a role player understanding their limitations.

When it comes to Thybulle’s strengths, he’ll enter the NBA as a highly decorated college defender with great lateral quickness and long arms. This opens up the possibility of Thybulle being comfortable guarding positions 2 through 4 in the NBA, and that will be intriguing enough for some team to overlook the fact he’s already 22 with little room for further evolution.
