Shooting Guard

Sterling Brown | Wesley Matthews | Pat Connaughton | Donte DiVincenzo

Shooting guard and small forward are largely interchangeable in the modern NBA and, in all likelihood, all four of these players will also log some minutes at the 3 spot over the course of the year.

Still, that doesn’t change the fact that the majority of Milwaukee’s wings skew toward the smaller side and the shooting guard position.

Overall depth may not be an issue at this spot, but it does remain the greatest cause of uncertainty for Milwaukee heading into the new season. Brogdon’s departure leaves an open spot in the starting five, and how, and how well, the Bucks manage to fill that vacancy stands out as one of the key questions for their season.

Brown stepped up capably in Brogdon’s place for a sustained spell last season, but the playoffs certainly showed that such a large role may just be a step too far, too soon, for the soon to be third year pro. On the other end of the experience scale is the recently acquired Wesley Matthews, a veteran who the Bucks will hope can slot in seamlessly as a three-and-D specialist.

Also not to be discounted from the potential starter consideration is Pat Connaughton. Having become a key cog of the rotation, and one of the team’s best playoff performers, at the tail end of last season, the well-rounded and reliable Connaughton could make for the most comfortable fit of all and a potential wildcard for the starting berth.

Milwaukee will have no concerns in terms of having enough options at the 2, the question is whether they can receive the same production from this position as they got last season.
