Power Forward

Giannis Antetokounmpo | Ersan Ilyasova | D.J. Wilson

Undoubtedly the most stable spot in the rotation in terms of carry-over from last season to next season, power forward remains a position of real strength, options and versatility for Milwaukee.

That sentiment could likely be applied if it was just Giannis Antetokounmpo, the league’s MVP, at this spot, but the truth is that behind the Bucks’ superstar and best player they have two very capable forwards also.

On the whole, Ersan Ilyasova was the preferred backup at this spot last season, although there were also plenty of minutes for him as a small-ball 5. Ilyasova offers up a steady veteran presence all around, with his strong frame and positional sense making him a more valuable defensive piece than he ever really gets credit for, and a perfectly respectable three-point stroke allowing him to stretch the floor offensively.

In the other option at this spot, D.J. Wilson offers an energy and exuberance that makes for a nice contrast with Ilyasova. Wilson demonstrated his outstanding feel for making defensive reads last season, allowing him to be unleashed when the Bucks opted to switch. While Ilyasova is vulnerable to being burned by opponents with a quick first step, Wilson is at a distinct disadvantage when matched up with a player who is prepared to embrace contact and leverage their physicality.

How the backup minutes at the 4 were managed by Budenholzer last season was often a source of discussion among Bucks fans, but Milwaukee does at least have the tools to be well-covered for most matchup types at the power forward position.
