NBA Draft Night: Trading Tony Snell for Jon Leuer

The first significant move that the Milwaukee Bucks made this summer was trading guard/forward Tony Snell to the Detroit Pistons, along with their 30th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, in exchange for big man Jon Leuer.

The goal of the trade was to move Tony Snell’s two year deal in exchange for a player on an expiring contract, and slightly less money next year.

Doing this trade not only freed up some cap-space initially, but it meant that Leuer’s deal could be stretched in order to create an additional $6 million in cap-space as well. That was something the team later did in order to create the space they needed in order to re-sign Brook Lopez and George Hill.

The Bucks did not do anything else on draft night, finding themselves unable to trade into the draft or buy their way into the second round. Though that was a bit disappointing at the time, it made sense for the team to avoid complicating their cap situation any further ahead of a busy summer.
