Peaking for the playoffs

While the Bucks’ chase for 70 wins will be on the mind of everyone once this All-Star break comes to a close, we all know they will be judged by what they do beyond the regular season.

To this point, the Bucks have thoroughly proved that they’re better than the squad that led the NBA with 60 wins and held a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Raptors in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. We know how the story unfolded afterwards and it’s subsequently generated some of the skepticism that faces the Bucks as they attempt to reach the NBA summit once again.

Of course, that is the way of life for NBA teams that are attempting to win it all without having done so previously.

But from Antetokounmpo on down, the Bucks have repeatedly talked about their desire to play games in June this season after coming up short in that regard last year. Take what the MVP said along those lines following their high-profile win over the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month, per Eric Woodyard of ESPN:

"“We’re not done,” Antetokounmpo said. “We’ve got a long way to go. We’re on pace, we can probably win 70 games, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to keep getting better. I think the team is getting better game by game and we’re definitely motivated. We haven’t done nothing. Not trying to take anything away from the games that we won, but we’ve got a long way to go and I’ve said in the past, but I’ll say it right now that our goal is to play in June and be the best team we can be at that time.”"

Perhaps the coming slate of going against teams that are both playoff-bound and have winning records will make the Bucks battle tested going into the postseason this year.

We’ll just have to wait and see whether the Bucks can accomplish all of that over the following couple of months this season.
