Could the season be cancelled?

With no obvious end in sight to the current crisis, it goes without saying that the prospect of the NBA resuming could become incredibly complicated.

The season will undoubtedly be on track to finish considerably later than its usual June end date, provided any plan upon return does commit to fulfilling the remaining games on the schedule as normal.

The knock-on effect of that, and how it will also inevitably impact college basketball, could well see usual hallmarks of the NBA calendar, such as the draft and free agency pushed back too. Of course, with the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo also currently facing a very uncertain future, that adds just another complication to be considered.

If the league does resume the 2019-20 season, it would also seem likely that it would have a major knock-on effect on their scheduling in the longer term, and perhaps even how the season would take shape next season.

According to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, his opinion is that the league could run into August this year in order to be completed as normal.

As the situation continues to evolve, perhaps that becomes a more difficult proposition, though. It certainly wouldn’t be in the interest of any of the NBA’s major stakeholders to flat out cancel the current season, but there is a possibility that this situation could force them into a tough spot where something like that becomes a possibility.
