NBA Draft 2020 Prospect Watch: Tre Jones
Fit with the Bucks
When it comes to examining how Jones could carve out a fit within the Bucks’ system, there’s plenty of overlap when taking Jones’ overall skill set into account.
Certainly Jones’ defensive qualities and strengths as a tough, hard-nosed on-ball defender fit perfectly with how guards have operated within the defensive scheme the Bucks have built under head coach Mike Budenholzer. Secondly, Jones’ sound game management with the ball in his hands is a useful asset for any young, reserve point guard to have and would be of good use for the Bucks, much less any NBA team.
Furthermore, the Bucks could certainly be in use of a third guard, given the ages of both Eric Bledsoe and George Hill. The Bucks did well in being able to cover in both Bledsoe and Hill’s extended absences over the 2019-20 season, but it doesn’t take long for some concerns to set in with their guard depth if a major injury developed for either one of the Bucks’ veteran guards (knock on wood).
However, the dilemma of whether Jones is the right fit for the Bucks is the big key.
Surely, any concerns over Jones’ offensive translation can vary from team to team and the Minnesota native’s improvements as a shooter over the last year have combated that reputation. But Jones’ scoring or more specifically, finishing limitations, do cast a concern over how much he’s able to give a spark offensively on the nights when his shot isn’t falling.
But with a strong guard draft class as well, the Bucks could identify a more desirable option at the guard spot that offers a little more upside than Jones has. And all of this could be moot if Jones isn’t available by the time the Bucks are on the clock with what would be the 20th overall pick as it stands in this current NBA hiatus.
