Milwaukee Bucks NBA Draft Prospect Watch: Jared Butler – Weaknesses

On the flip side, Butler carries some big concerns that certainly influence his current projection by draft experts.

The biggest of those question marks revolve all around Butler’s physical profile. Standing at 6’3,” 190 pounds and armed with a reported 6’4″ wingspan, Butler’s size, frame and physical tools are severe deficiencies at the next level, especially at either guard spot that he’s suited to play at.

On top of that, Butler is far from explosive, which further limits how he will be able to combat the physicality issues and high-caliber athleticism that is prevalent throughout the NBA.

While the 19-year-old has shown himself to be a capable finisher during his time at Baylor, Butler will have to vastly improve his frame to withstand the physicality of opposing rim protectors. On that front, though, Butler upped his 3 free throw attempts per-40 minutes as a freshman to 3.9 as a sophomore this year, which does show him starting to embrace and absorb contact within the interior on his part.

Additionally, as skilled of a ball handler as Butler is, his playmaking skills and overall capabilities haven’t come on to the same degree. Over his two years at Baylor, Butler compiled a 1.33 assist-to-turnover ratio. Butler’s scoring abilities are enough to make him a dynamic threat off the ball, but being able to improve and grow his vision and precision as a passer will assuredly take him to the next level.
