Milwaukee Bucks: In search of the best Bucks player nicknames – Giannis Antetokounmpo

To start us all off, we’re keeping it current with Giannis ‘The Greek Freak’ Antetokounmpo.

For as long as Antetokounmpo has been in Milwaukee, that moniker has followed him. After all, it perfectly sums up seeing a player of Antetokounmpo’s size, skilled ball handling and freakish athleticism stride up and down the floor effortlessly, especially as he’s matured and sculpted his body over the years.

In his appearance during Pat Connnaughton’s radio-a-thon held in May, Antetokounmpo gave his approval of the nickname and recalled first hearing it during his rookie season in Milwaukee:

"“I don’t remember the first time I heard about it — it was probably my rookie year — but I really don’t know who came up with it,” he said. “I just went on the court one day and I had like a crazy dunk or a crazy block and after that everyone started calling me the Greek Freak. So it stuck by me, I love it and it’s a cool nickname.”"

Antetokounmpo has gone as far as to place a trademark on the nickname and it has some prominence within his partnership and marketing with Nike, whom he has produced a signature shoe and clothing line. As Antetokounmpo’s star keeps on rising into the international consciousness, the Greek Freak keeps getting a little bit freakier.
