Milwaukee Bucks 2020 NBA Draft: Looking at Isaiah Joe’s weaknesses

While it may be a stretch to label Joe as a 3-point specialist, there’s no question that the rest of his game is in need of filling out to be on par with his perimeter shooting abilities.

Joe is certainly a shot creator and possesses the ability to generate shots off the dribble, especially from 3-point range. But those skills haven’t extended into inside the arc and he’s far from an adept or even willing driver in the paint at this stage after having shot 44.4 percent on 2-point shots over his time in Fayetteville.

Given Joe’s size (6’5″), improving upon his lanky frame, which currently comes in at 180 lbs., will be necessary in showing the willingness to attack closeouts and either converting finishing opportunities against NBA size and athleticism or get to the free throw line. On that latter note, Joe averaged 3.5 free throw attempts per 40 minutes while in college.

Joe’s size and physical tools, marked by his reported 6’10” wingspan, is ideal for someone of his position on the wing and his intelligence and activity defending off the ball is certainly a strong enough foundation upon entering the pros. But the strength deficiencies Joe has could hinder his ability at the next level when matched on to more powerful wings and/or speedier guards.

Again, Joe shouldn’t just be pigeonholed as a shooter as he does offer up a worthwhile foundation of skills and tools among other areas in his game. It’s all about building up his total skill set to enhance the complete value he could potentially offer at the next level.
