Milwaukee Bucks: To buy or sell on Wesley Matthews in free agency – The verdict
It is not that hard to see why the Milwaukee Bucks should want to hang onto Wesley Matthews this season. The guard is the perfect role player on this Milwaukee team, fitting the bill on both ends of the court with his shooting and top-tier defense.
Fingers crossed he opts-into that $2.6 million deal for next season, but it would be justifiable if he elected to enter the free agent pool in search of a new payday.
As mentioned in a previous piece, the Bucks may hold the most prominent advantage over any other team trying to land Matthews this offseason. Being a Madison native, the guard has raved about being able to come back and play in his home state.
"Speaking at media day last offseason: “Coming back home is a sentimental feeling, and one that you can’t quite describe. And to see the success, the growth of the city, the growth of the state, what this Bucks organization and what this team has done, I come back and I don’t even recognize some of the stuff around here. It’s cool, and I’m excited to be a part of it. Winning is huge, and I just feel that what I bring as a player fits perfectly with what this team is about.” Several months later, Matthews appeared on the Posted up podcast hosted by Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes. When Haynes asked the guard what it was like playing for his hometown team: “It’s amazing. It really has, it’s been amazing. I wouldn’t have appreciated it in my younger years. When we first met in Portland, I wouldn’t have appreciated being home. I wouldn’t have appreciated it like that. My family, friends, the supports of the fans, it’s unbelievable.”"
Whether that holds any actual value in a decision from Wesley Matthews remains up in the air, but the Milwaukee Bucks should unquestionably look to bring the 33-year-old back next season.
