5 guards for Milwaukee Bucks to target at 24th overall pick – Devon Dotson

Starting this off, I’ve certainly been more than a little bullish when it comes to projecting Devon Dotson’s fit within the Bucks’ foundation.

Dotson has generally been thought of as a second rounder and a fringe first round pick at best as the pre-draft process has gone on at this point. Case in point, ESPN has Dotson ranked 33rd on their top-100 board while The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie ($$) currently has Dotson ranked 42nd in his most recent Big Board.

While Dotson isn’t generally thought of as being among the more desirable guard prospects in this draft class, his body of work over the last two seasons at the University of Kansas warrants more consideration, in my opinion. After all, Dotson averaged 14.9 points on .474/.332/.808 shooting splits, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals over his 66 appearances as a Jayhawk over that span of time.

Dotson’s dazzling mix of speed and athleticism, constant downhill attacking and defensive prowess are all alluring qualities from the jump. The fact that he’s as is efficient of a driver and finisher offensively and projects as a solid two-way presence at the next level only reinforces his NBA prospects.

Of course, the biggest question mark in regards to Dotson’s fit in the league, much less in Milwaukee, is his shooting deficiencies, especially after his 3-point efficiency dipped down to 30.9 percent as a sophomore compared to shooting 36.3 percent as a freshman.

Is that dip a cause of long-term concern or just a result of a bad shooting year combined with the shortened college season? It’s too early to determine that now and surely Dotson has honed in on that aspect of his game over the last several months since making his decision to enter this year’s draft.
