Milwaukee Bucks: To buy or sell on Frank Mason III in free agency – The verdict

The biggest underlying factor, debatably, in deciding to bring back Mason revolves around what Milwaukee’s point guard depth chart is going to look like next season.

If Bledsoe is in fact traded, and if he is in fact traded for a non-point guard player, the need for Mason will be increased. But even if Bledsoe remains on the roster, or if the Bucks swap him for a different point guard, having Mason at the bottom of the bench would still be beneficial for the reasons already discussed.

That brings us to the biggest question and one that we briefly alluded to before diving into all of this: What does Mason’s market this offseason look like?

Milwaukee holds the right to match any offer that any team decides to throw his way or to even offer a contract to Mason themselves. At this point, there’s no knowing of what what his market could look like.

However, BTBP co-site expert Jordan Treske wrote last month about the challenges Mason might face in getting a standard NBA contract, despite his newfound G League MVP status.

Taking a look at the previous award winners that Treske mentions, as well as their contracts after winning the award, it seems as if Mason’s value should fall right around the minimum contract line this offseason if he were to get one. But Mason’s more-esteemed track record in college, as well as his work in the NBA before the G-League, could skew his value upwards, even at 26 years old.

With everything in mind, it shouldn’t be a foregone conclusion that the Bucks will bring Mason back next season, even at such a low cost and taking into account their point guard depth concerns.

Again, the Bucks ultimately hold the cards in this situation and barring an opposing team coming in and offering another contract, Mason may serve to be a fallback option, depending on their other offseason action. Mason put in the work and production to warrant such a deal this offseason, but time will tell if that will be enough.
