Milwaukee Bucks: 5 free agents to target with bi-annual exception – Markieff Morris
Our final target for the Bucks’ bi-annual exception is someone who is fresh off of reaching the NBA submit with reigning NBA champions, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Like many Lakers veterans, Markieff Morris rehabilitated his value with a solid showing over the course of the team’s run to an NBA title as he carved a decent-sized role in the team’s playoff rotation under head coach Frank Vogel. For Morris, it capped off a whirlwind last couple of seasons that featured many short-lived stints around the league.
Now going back into the open market, Morris will have to see whether that championship sheen will lead to garnering a deal worth more than the veteran minimum. After all, Morris had signed a two-deal with the Detroit Pistons last offseason worth the bi-annual exception, which came after a wayward 2018-19 campaign split between Washington and Oklahoma City.
Morris is coming off his best shooting season from three as he connected on 38.6 percent between his time in Detroit and L.A and hit 40.5 percent of his catch-and-shoot triples. Between his floor spacing, size and defensive toughness, Morris does have some interchangeability at both the 4 and 5 spots.
Milwaukee reportedly had interest in the 31-year-old around the time of the trade deadline before they were able to land Marvin Williams after his buyout from the Charlotte Hornets. Morris was bought by Detroit himself shortly thereafter, paving the way for him to latch on the Lakers and earning himself a ring.
Now the Bucks are back at square one in terms of trying to fill minutes behind Giannis Antetokounmpo at the backup 4 spot. Perhaps the Bucks circle back towards Morris once this year’s free agency period opens up later this month.
We’ll continue to preview this year’s free agent class in the run to the start of free agency and look at some bigger names of note that the Bucks could pursue with the mid-level exception.
