Examining Torrey Craig’s style of play with the Milwaukee Bucks

As the Bucks have churned over their roster significantly this offseason, the addition of Craig gives the Bucks the jolt of tenacious, physical defending on the wing that they lost with Wesley Matthews heading to Los Angeles.

At his size of 6’7,” 221 lbs. and rangy wingspan, Craig can cover multiple positions nor does he shy away from truly tough defensive assignments. While his ability to shadow his opponent is his bread and butter, Craig does have some the ability to stuff away shots at the basket, as evidenced by his 2.7 career block percentage in the NBA.

It’s clear though that in order to fulfill his status as a 3-and-D wing, Craig has to improve on the former as a career 32 percent 3-point shooter. Throughout his time in Australia and in Denver, Craig’s shooting has gone in waves and the Bucks will hopeful that they will ride a wave that sees Craig’s perimeter shooting surge above his career percentages.

If it wasn’t for that, Craig would be a shoo-in to see heavy minutes around the Bucks’ cornerstones, potentially in crunch time minutes. That may still be the case, but it will be curious to see how opposing defenses will go about respecting him alongside another non-shooter like Giannis Antetkokounmpo.

Make no mistake, though, as Craig does fill a need for the Bucks as they largely valued adding more shooting and offense this offseason. Bringing in someone that provides the kind of toughness and hustle that Craig has succeeded in doing all around the world may very well make him a fan favorite in Milwaukee when all is said and done.
