Milwaukee Bucks: 3 goals for Bobby Portis for 2020-21 season
Goal no. 3 – Solidify frontcourt depth
There’s no question that Portis comes to Milwaukee at a time of great change and that certainly exists in their frontcourt behind the likes of Antetokounmpo and Lopez.
Now, with the likes of Ersan Ilyasova, Robin Lopez and Marvin Williams elsewhere in the league, unsigned or having retired, it’s Portis who enters as the Bucks’ lone frontcourt answer going into the 2020-21 season.
Considering the many obstacles the Bucks are facing going into the year and more than three months after their run down in the bubble ended, having Portis stand as their lone depth piece is an incredibly risky proposition. Of course, the Bucks have promised more versatility and they do have unproven options with rookie forward Jordan Nwora and two-way player Mamadi Diakite that may be in line for bigger minutes, depending on how the season shakes out.
Either way, though, Portis is the most proven option that Budenholzer and co. have on their roster to spell the two-time MVP and the All-Defensive honoree in Lopez.
Portis has spoken of having no preference for whether he wants to see minutes at the 4 and 5 spots just as he talked about in his first appearance as a Bucks player late last week. It’s a good thing that’s the case because Milwaukee will need him to see considerable minutes at both positions throughout the year.
