3 early weak points for the Milwaukee Bucks – Lack of traditional backup center

First and foremost, Bobby Portis has been fantastic off the bench for the Bucks this season. He is the team’s leading scorer off the bench and has provided an immeasurable amount of energy in the second unit every time he has stepped on the floor.

However, the power forward has played out of position for the most part this season as he’s logging 79 percent of his minutes with the Bucks at the center position. While that versatility has been a plus for the team, they could undoubtedly use the defensive presence of a traditional backup center, particularly in the paint.

The Bucks are currently allowing the fourth-fewest opponent points in the paint per game, which is good. However, it is a step back from their previous stance as the top overall in the previous two seasons. While Brook Lopez has done his part defensively in the starting lineup, the team does not have that sizeable defensive presence like Robin Lopez from last season to hold things down when he is spectating from the sidelines.

While it is not hindering them drastically thus far, the Bucks could use a traditional backup center on the roster as they gear up for another title run. There could be several intriguing candidates on the trade or buyout markets in the coming months, and the Bucks could be active in finding a defensive-minded presence down low.
