Third free agent point guard the Milwaukee Bucks could target — Isaiah Thomas

Certainly the most recognizable name on the list, the Bucks could make a run at two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas as he works towards an NBA return.

The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski reported Wednesday night that the Bucks and Lakers were two teams potentially expressing interest in Thomas to bolster their point guard depth. With Thomas arguably being the most compelling free agent point guard on the market, Milwaukee’s interest is justifiable, even if they are just doing their due diligence.

While the Bucks might not be getting the version of Thomas that was making a strong case in the MVP running just a few years ago, he could still be a serviceable piece. Spending 40 games with the Washington Wizards last season, Thomas averaged 12.2 points on .408/.413/.816 shooting splits, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.

While injury concerns have been the primary reason teams have stayed away from giving him a chance, the guard has assured that he is fully healthy for the first time in years after undergoing hip surgery in February 2020. If Thomas is back up to speed and continues clamoring for an NBA comeback, that level of production and upside he brings to the table could be a welcoming addition to Milwaukee’s bench.

Still, despite the praise, the guard is not a perfect fit by any means. His substandard efforts on the defensive end are undoubtedly nothing to rave about, making him an odd fit for this Milwaukee team. However, as they continue looking for a backup point guard to spark some life into the second unit on a cheap deal, Thomas seems to be the most feasible candidate.
