Milwaukee Bucks: 3 questions to answer following the P.J. Tucker trade
By Dalton Sell
Second question the Milwaukee Bucks must answer following P.J. Tucker trade — Will they target a point guard next?
Following their trade for Tucker, the Bucks have an apparent issue to address in the backcourt that requires adding more talent.
In order to get salaries to match in the deal, the Bucks traded backup point guard D.J. Augustin to the Rockets. It was a feasible move as his production this season was not up to par with his hefty salary, but the team now must quickly explore their options on the open market to find a worthy replacement.
The trade has paved the way for more financial flexibility from Milwaukee’s front office to work with, giving them several opens to exploring. The most logical approach would be to scour the free agent market for a guard, as there are several potential targets there that they have previous connections to in the recent past. The front office could potentially continue its aggressive approach and look for a low-cost option on the trade market before next week’s deadline, but that is just speculation.
Signing free agent Isaiah Thomas reportedly appears to be in the cards, as The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski has noted that the Bucks are expressing interest in him. Thomas would be an affordable option that could be productive if he still has something left in the tank, but that remains unclear.
However they decide to handle it, adding a backup floor general will be a pivotal next step for the Bucks. With Milwaukee’s bench ranking 17th in scoring and 27th in assists per game this season, they could undoubtedly use another scorer and ballhandler in the second unit.
Starter Jrue Holiday is currently the only point guard on the roster, and the team must add another floor general in the second unit sooner rather than later. While nothing appears imminent, one would think that they have prioritized filling that vacancy in the coming days.
