Third reason the Milwaukee Bucks should pursue Austin Rivers — He’s an affordable target

Lowe mentioned that Rivers could be a potential buyout candidate if the Knicks cannot trade him before March 25, but either route would be a feasible way for the Bucks to get him.

Through trade, the Bucks would absorb Rivers’ three-year deal worth approximately $10 million that he signed with the Knicks this past offseason. Making $3.5 million this year, the team would be able to bring in Rivers using their recently acquired $4.8 million trade exception from the Tucker trade and have some left to spare. That would certainly be a reasonable option for the Bucks, especially because the following two years on his contract are non-guaranteed.

If the front office decides to take the buyout route, they could bring the guard in on a deal for the remainder of this year, which would also be a no-brainer. Rivers would almost certainly be looking to join a contending team under those circumstances, and the Bucks could be an enticing option worth considering.

With their asset cabinet emptied out and their current financial situation not the most flexible, the Bucks are likely out of the running to make any seismic moves to bolster their roster. Rivers would be an impactful addition to this roster that needs help at the point guard position, whichever pathway they took to potentially acquire him.
